Nepal's elite endurance athletes are set to trade the high-altitude trails of the Himalayas for the rugged expanse of Australia's Snowy Mountains. The Nepal Adventure Running Federation (NARF) officially confirmed on Wednesday that a national contingent will compete in the prestigious Kosci 100, part of the Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko by UTMB series, scheduled for November 28, 2025. The announcement, made at the Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF), underscores Nepal's growing ambition to dominate the global ultra-running circuit beyond its domestic peaks.
A Blend of Politics and Endurance
While the technical challenge of the 100-kilometre race is significant, the squad announcement highlighted a compelling human interest story. Among the selected athletes is Dawa Tamang, who balances the gruelling demands of ultra-training with his duties as the Ward President of Kalika Rural Municipality-1.
Indra Gautam, Member of Parliament for Bagmati Province and the event's special guest, singled out Tamang as an example of discipline.
"To lead a community and to compete at an elite international level requires a rare kind of fortitude," Gautam told the press. "Dawa Tamang's participation is not just about sports; it is a statement about leadership and dedication. His journey from the ward office to the starting line in Australia will inspire many."
Gautam extended his best wishes to the entire team, noting that Nepal's presence in such events amplifies the nation's soft power through sports.
The Challenge Down Under
The Kosci 100 is no ordinary race. As part of the UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc) World Series, it is a qualifier for the sport's premier events. The course winds through the Kosciuszko National Park, presenting runners with unpredictable alpine weather and technical trails that differ vastly from the steep ascents of Nepal. However, Federation Vice-President Rajan Karki remains confident in the squad's pedigree. "We are proud to send our runners to such a critical global event," Karki stated. "Nepali athletes have repeatedly proven their physiological advantage and mental resilience. We believe this team will not just participate, but compete for the podium and make the nation proud again."
Corporate Backing Secures Preparation
In a boost for the team's logistics, Xtep Nepal was unveiled as the official kit sponsor. The partnership ensures the athletes will be equipped with high-performance apparel and gear essential for the gruelling 100km distance. With the sponsorship deal signed and political support secured, the focus now shifts to the trials. The federation indicated that the selected athletes will immediately commence a high-altitude training block, specifically designed to build the explosive stamina required for the Australian course. As the November 2025 race date approaches, all eyes will be on whether the runners from the roof of the world can conquer the highest peaks of Australia.
