Kathmandu Gorkhas Unveil New Identity Ahead of NPL Season 2

In a bold rebranding move ahead of the second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), the Kathmandu franchise has officially unveiled its new name and logo — transforming from Kathmandu Gurkhas to Kathmandu Gorkhas. The announcement signals a fresh start for a team eager to shake off last season's middling fifth-place finish and aim for a title run in 2025. The new logo, according to team officials, is a vibrant fusion of the cultural and architectural heritage of Kathmandu Valley, incorporating symbolic elements from Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, and Nuwakot. It's more than just a cosmetic change — it's a statement of intent, one that grounds the franchise in identity and pride. "The name 'Gorkhas' resonates with valour, history, and unity. We wanted the logo to echo that same spirit — one that connects deeply with the roots of the Valley," said the franchise in an official statement. The revamped identity has already been reflected across all of Kathmandu Gorkhas' social media platforms.

Big Guns in the Dugout: Monty Desai to Lead Coaching Setup

In a headline-grabbing appointment, former Nepal national team head coach Monty Desai has been roped in as the head coach of the Gorkhas. Desai, who played a key role in elevating Nepal's ODI performances during his tenure, brings a wealth of international experience and tactical acumen. He will be supported by Basanta Shahi as assistant coach, Suraj Shakya as technical analyst, and Puran Tiruwa as the team's physiotherapist. The franchise has promised to announce additional support staff in the coming days.

Corporate Firepower: WorldLink and Royal Tulip Join Hands with Gorkhas

Strengthening its off-field structure, Kathmandu Gorkhas has inked a main sponsorship deal with WorldLink, Nepal's leading internet service provider. The brand's logo will be prominently featured on the front of the team jersey, enhancing visibility and prestige. The sponsorship deal was formalised with a signing ceremony between Anubhav Swar Sirohiya, Executive Director of Kathmandu Gorkhas, and Manoj Agrawal, Executive Director of WorldLink. Also present were CEO Suraj Singh Thakuri and Balram Pathak, General Manager of Royal Tulip Kathmandu, who jointly signed a hospitality partnership agreement. Royal Tulip, a luxury five-star hotel in Gwarko, Lalitpur, will provide comprehensive residential facilities to players and staff throughout the tournament, ensuring that comfort and recovery remain top priorities. In addition, the franchise has partnered with Thunder Bolt Cricket Academy as its official training partner, cementing its commitment to professional preparation.

Core Squad Retained: Familiar Faces, Fierce Ambitions

Kathmandu Gorkhas have opted for continuity over overhaul in their squad selection. The team has retained several marquee names from the previous season, including:

🇳🇵 Bhim Sharki – Middle-order Anchor

🇳🇵 Shahab Alam – Left-arm Spin Wizard

🇳🇵 Rashid Khan, Dipesh Kandel, and Pratik Shrestha – Young guns ready to step up

With a restructured leadership group, a robust coaching team, and a strong corporate backbone, Kathmandu Gorkhas appear more focused than ever to rise above their fifth-place finish last season and push for playoff contention — or even beyond. As the countdown to NPL Season 2 ticks on, the message from Kathmandu is loud and clear: new name, same fire. The Gorkhas are ready to march forward.
