Ten-Man Man United Stun Roma 3-2 as PSG Blitz Villarreal in Historic Night

MANCHESTER — Matheus Cunha delivered eight minutes of pure theatre at Old Trafford, scoring twice in three minutes to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 win over AS Roma, only for the match to end with him picking up a red card in stoppage time.

The Brazilian's frantic cameo capped a breathless night of Champions League action across Europe. PSG, Bayern and Barcelona all continued to confirm their status as the very best. Meanwhile, fans across the continent were mourning the loss of Tenerife's Jesus de Miguel.

In Manchester, it was all about unrest at first. The United fans released hundreds of green and gold balloons and began throwing tennis balls onto the pitch in protest. Roma took full advantage. Matias Soule put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute, and Donyell Malen doubled the lead from the spot in the 18th. United mounted a recovery in the second half. Bruno Fernandes pulled one back with a penalty in the 58th minute. Cunha stepped up, equalising with a header in the 83rd minute, then added a second in the 86th to unsettle the home side. He was ecstatic after the second goal, removed his shirt and ran straight into the crowd (a yellow card for that). A rather ill-considered tackle in the closing minutes brought a second booking and a red card, but United held on to the three points.

In Madrid, Bayern Munich absolutely tore apart Atletico Madrid's defence to win 2-0. Atletico didn't have a single shot on target in the first half and were kept at bay until the restart. Lennart Karl broke the deadlock, getting on the end of a lovely piece of work from Robin Le Normand in the box and finishing calmly. Atletico did push forward, but Bayern quickly capitalised on another defensive error in the 74th minute. Harry Kane found Konrad Laimer with a simple pass; the midfielder slotted it past Oblak to put the game beyond any chance of recovery.

Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain sent another statement of intent in the group. The French champions set a competition record for the fastest four goals in Champions League history, scoring four times quicker than any side in the competition's history, to go 6-0 against Villarreal. PSG are therefore the only side in the group with a full 12 points.

Barcelona have stayed in the hunt with a 3-0 home win over Aston Villa. Lamine Yamal capitalised on a loose ball after just seven minutes, and Raphinha then scored twice in the second half, one set up by Joao Cancelo, to make it 3-0. The result sees Barcelona on nine points, level with Villa and five other teams.

Inter Milan equalled that at De Kuip with a 3-0 win over Feyenoord (Yann Bisseck, Pio Esposito and Piotr Zielinski). LASK secured their second win in the tournament with a 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava. Galatasaray beat Stuttgart 2-0, with Aleksey Batrakov scoring both goals. Sporting took their first win in the competition with a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at Stamford Bridge. Bodo/Glimt held Lille to a 0-0 draw.
