Bayern Munich 2-2 Borussia Dortmund: Fabio Silva Equalises Late in Klassiker

MUNICH — Fabio Silva scored in the 89th minute to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw for Borussia Dortmund at Bayern Munich on Saturday. It was a case of Dortmund taking full advantage of a very unfortunate night for the hosts with Kane missing a penalty and the woodwork saving Bayern four times.

The end result sees both of the big guns still level on 18 points at the top of the Bundesliga, Bayern holding on to first spot purely on the basis of goal difference after two separate leads have been lost in a turbulent Klassiker.

Head coach Vincent Kompany was sidelined through illness and so assistant coach Aaron Danks took charge of a side that were in no doubt about their ability to dominate but who were repeatedly cursed by goal. Michael Olise got on the frame early on and Ismael Saibari had a point-blank chance that was wasted before he went off with an ankle injury and had to leave the ground on crutches. Dortmund also had a goal disallowed via VAR.

Bayern broke it open seven minutes before the break. Konrad Laimer got in on the attack, his initial strike going over the bar from Gregor Kobel who parried it. He then slotted the rebound home to put Bayern ahead.

Kane collected the Ballon d'Or in London on Monday and had a fairly quiet week in between with a rest during the midweek cup action. He was awarded a penalty in the 10th minute of the second half with Bayern already 1-0 up and his spot kick went against the crossbar.

Dortmund took advantage of the stoppage time reprieve on the hour mark with Serhou Guirassy equalising. Bayern responded six minutes later. Kane in part atoned for his own miss from the spot by playing a pass across the face of goal which Upamecano finished off with a tap in.

Misfortune continues to dog the Bavarians. Serge Gnabry and Olise are also both forced off injured, Saibari joining them in the treatment room. That leaves Kane with a low effort that just hit the post, opening the door for Dortmund's late intervention.

In the 89th minute Silva slipped behind the Bayern backline to slot home the equaliser. Bayern were still pushing for a winner and it was only for Lennart Karl's stoppage time effort to hit the crossbar.

'Mixed emotions,' Danks said. 'We're absolutely pleased with the performance, particularly the second half. In the end we'll be disappointed we haven't got the win. We had the right moments for us, it just didn't quite go our way today.'

Danks pointed out that the medical team would still have to assess the injuries, but Saibari's ankle looked very bad.
