Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis is set to play for Biratnagar Kings in the upcoming second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL). The franchise officially announced the signing of the 41-year-old batting star through a press release on Friday, marking one of the most significant international signings in the league’s history. Widely regarded as one of the most stylish and dependable batters of his generation, Du Plessis brings with him a wealth of international and franchise experience. He was a key member of the Chennai Super Kings during their Indian Premier League (IPL) title victories in 2018 and 2021, and later captained the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise. The Biratnagar Kings management expressed pride and excitement over the signing, emphasising its impact on the league’s growing stature. “Having a world-class cricketer like Faf du Plessis join us is a matter of great pride for both Biratnagar Kings and the NPL,” said Team Director Dipendra Chaudhary. “His presence will not only strengthen our team but also inspire other global stars to be part of Nepal’s premier cricket league in the coming days.”
Du Plessis has represented South Africa in 69 Tests, 143 ODIs, and 50 T20 internationals, earning respect worldwide for his leadership, consistency, and professionalism. Biratnagar Kings, whose marquee player remains Sandeep Lamichhane, will aim for redemption this season after a disappointing outing in the inaugural edition, where they finished sixth in the single round-robin stage under Irish coach Kevin O’Brien. During that campaign, the team’s morale was boosted by the presence of New Zealand star Martin Guptill, but they failed to progress beyond the group stage. With Du Plessis’ arrival, the Kings now look poised to make a stronger statement in NPL Season 2.
