Birtamod, Jhapa—Kankai Municipality has become the first team to qualify for the final of the inaugural Inter-Municipal Women's Football Competition in Birtamod, Jhapa.
Kankai secured their place in the championship match after edging past Mechinagar Municipality 4-3 in a thrilling sudden-death finish in the first semi-final at Domalal Rajbanshi Stadium on Friday. With both teams failing to break the deadlock in regulation time, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout, which ended in a 2-2 draw before being decided in sudden death.
For Kankai, Alex Chaudhary, Barsha Magar, Sushila Chaudhary, and Chhatrika Chaudhary successfully converted their shots, while Purnima Rai and Sukriya Mia missed their attempts. Mechinagar saw successful conversions from Semihangma Limbu, Rozina Rai, and Bhawana Pariyar but suffered setbacks as Barsha Oli, Karuna Budhathoki, and Babita Karki failed to score.
Sushila Chaudhary of Kankai was named Player of the Match for her stellar performance and was awarded a cash prize of Rs 5,000.
The second semi-final, scheduled for Saturday, will see Arjundhara Municipality take on Bhadrapur Municipality for the final berth. The championship match on Falgun 5 will reward the winners with an impressive trophy and a cash prize of Rs 300,000, while the runners-up will take home Rs 150,000.
The Birtamod Municipal Sports Development Committee is organizing the competition, which aims to promote women's football and nurture local talent.
