Real Madrid Complete 4-3 Comeback Win Over Roma in Champions League

ROME — Real Madrid pulled off a stunning late surge at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night, scoring three times in the final seven minutes to secure a sensational 4-3 Champions League win over AS Roma.

Roma were on course for an emphatic home win as Donyell Malen's second-half brace put them in total control. An utterly extraordinary collapse saw Madrid take all three points on a dramatic night that also saw former Roma manager Jose Mourinho return to his old ground.

The hosts scored first in the 20th minute, with Matías Soulé receiving the ball from Marten de Roon and slotting a clinical finish from outside the box. Madrid equalised five minutes later, with Kylian Mbappé making his 100th Champions League appearance. His effort deflected off Roma's Gianluca Mancini and went in. It was Mbappé's 72nd Champions League goal.

The game broke open in the second half through Malen's six-minute burst. He punished a Vinicius Junior error with a shot that beat Valverde. Malen got another in quick succession. An initial offside call silenced the home fans, but VAR quickly overturned it, and Roma were two up, with the Spaniards now in real trouble.

Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini went to his bench and brought on defensive reinforcements, hoping to cut off Madrid's passing lanes. That tactical retreat completely backfired.

Madrid cut the deficit in the 85th minute, with substitute Carlos Espi slotting the ball home for the visitors. Three minutes later it was level again as playmaker Arda Güler delivered a perfect corner and the young Endrick rose to head home.

Madrid weren't done. In the 90th minute, Güler delivered another killer set piece into the box. Rüdiger headed it home, past the keeper, securing an absolutely incredible turn of events.

Madrid's win is their second in a row in the Champions League and gives them vital momentum as they chase leaders Barcelona (six points clear in La Liga). For Roma, it's a total disaster, leaving them on just one point from a possible six after a draw and a very painful home defeat.
