Dharan: New Road Team (NRT) etched their name in the history books once again, claiming the 25th Budhasubba Gold Cup title with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Church Boys United in a pulsating final at Dharan Stadium on Saturday.
The match showcased resilience and determination as NRT overcame an early deficit to lift the coveted trophy with a heroic brace from their foreign star, Henry Poko.
Church Boys United struck first in the 24th minute when captain Anant Tamang rose above the defence to power a header into the back of the net, sending their fans into raptures. However, NRT responded almost immediately, with Poko levelling the score three minutes later, reigniting hope for his side.
In the second half, NRT took control of the game, and Poko once again proved to be the difference-maker. In the 57th minute, he netted the decisive goal, completing his brace and securing NRT's second consecutive Budhasubba Gold Cup title.
This victory was lovely for NRT, who avenged their recent defeat to Church Boys in the Aaha Rara Pokhara Gold Cup just two days prior. Church Boys had edged NRT in a sudden-death thriller in that match to advance to the quarterfinals.
NRT's triumph marks their third Budhasubba Gold Cup title overall, having previously won the tournament in 2064 BS and the 24th edition last year, where they defeated Morang Football Association 2-1 in the final.
As champions, NRT took home the prestigious trophy and a cash prize of Rs 1 million, while Church Boys United, despite a valiant effort, settled for the runner-up prize of Rs 500,000.
The victory underscores NRT's growing dominance in domestic football and its ability to rise to the occasion in high-stakes matches. With Henry Poko in scintillating form and the team's unwavering spirit, NRT has firmly established itself as one of Nepal's most formidable football clubs.
As the celebrations begin in Dharan, NRT will focus on future challenges, aiming to build on this success and continue its legacy in Nepali football. For Church Boys United, the defeat will motivate them to return more potent in their quest for silverware.
