Mechinagar Gold Cup Returns After Five-Year Hiatus

KAKARBHITTA, JHAPA—After a five-year hiatus due to various challenges, the much-anticipated fifth edition of the Mechinagar Gold Cup is finally set to return next month. The tournament will be held at the Kakarbhitta Higher Secondary School playground in Mechinagar-6, Jhapa, from Falgun 21 to 28 (March 5th-12th), promising a week of thrilling football action.

The Kakarbhitta Football Training Center, patronised by Mechinagar Municipality, organises the event to reignite the region's passion for football. The organisers unveiled the tournament details on Saturday during a public meeting and interaction at the Kakarbhitta Drinking Water User's and Sanitary Organisation's hall.

With an estimated budget of Rs 7.858 million, the tournament will feature eight teams, including four top-tier clubs from Kathmandu's A Division, the host Kakarbhitta Football Training Center, a prominent club from the Mofussil region, and two international teams. This diverse lineup is expected to elevate the competition's prestige and attract fans across the region.

The champions of the Mechinagar Gold Cup will take home a trophy, medals, certificates, and a cash prize of Rs 1 million, while the runners-up will receive Rs 500,000. Additionally, various individual awards will be presented to recognise outstanding performances throughout the tournament.

Notable figures attended the press conference, including Constituent Assembly member Rabin Koirala, who served as the chief guest. Former Provincial Assembly member Shri Prasad Mainali, Jhapa District Football Association General Secretary Sundar Basnet, and local political leaders, including Sunday Paneru (Nepali Congress) and Raju Karki (CPN-UML), were also present. They expressed their support for the event and emphasised its importance in promoting sports and community development in the region.
From the Public Demand, Former Provincial Assembly member Shri Prasad Mainali will serve this event as co-ordinator. Ashok Rai delivered the welcome address, while Lakpa Tamang moderated the program. Kakarbhitta Football Training Center President Nawaraj Oli chaired the event, highlighting the organisation's commitment to reviving the tournament and providing a platform for local and national talent.
The return of the Mechinagar Gold Cup marks a significant moment for football enthusiasts in Jhapa and beyond. As the countdown to Falgun 21 begins, fans eagerly await what promises to be a celebration of skill, passion, and sportsmanship.
