KATHMANDU — Fifteen sports instructors from Nepal’s seven provinces completed a three-day intensive training to advance wheelchair basketball and parasport coaching nationwide.
The Nepal Spinal Cord Injury Sports Association (NSCISA) organised the workshop under the European Union-supported project "Mainstreaming Inclusive Sports in Nepal." Sessions were held at Hotel Attick Empire in Gyaneshwar and Galaxy Public School.
The workshop, "Training Coaches in Inclusive Coaching," addressed a key gap in adaptive sports by providing comprehensive theoretical and practical instruction. Head trainer Prem Sundar Hona led technical sessions on wheelchair basketball tactics, athlete needs assessments, and inclusive coaching methods for athletes with physical impairments.
Beyond technical drills, the curriculum also focused on developing safe, accessible, and structurally sound training environments to ensure meaningful participation for athletes with disabilities. At the ceremony, NSCISA President Devi Acharya emphasised the strategic importance of expanding grassroots coaching capabilities to integrate adaptive athletes into mainstream competition.
"Programs like this are instrumental in bringing athletes with disabilities directly into the sporting mainstream," Acharya stated. "By upgrading the technical proficiency of our coaches nationwide, we lay a solid foundation to nurture talent across all seven provinces and elevate the competitive standard of disability sports in Nepal."
The closing ceremony included NSCISA leaders such as Vice-President Super Rai and Treasurer Biru Dhungana, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to expanding adaptive sports infrastructure nationwide.
