In Birmingham, Bukayo Saka scored just before the hour to give Premier League winners Arsenal a hard-fought 1-0 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday, keeping the Gunners' perfect start to their title defence.
The turning point came in the 59th minute when substitute Eberechi Eze found a clever way past the home defence by passing to Riccardo Calafiori; Calafiori then produced a low cross that Saka met by knocking the ball in from close range.
The goal followed shortly after the video assistant referee had cancelled Arsenal's earlier penalty award. Saka did not appear disturbed by that decision and quickly reacted inside the penalty area to break the deadlock and quieten the home crowd.
Arsenal kept the ball for most of the game, but Unai Emery's reformed team was not overwhelmed. Villa came nearest early on when Emi Buendia hit the crossbar with a strong shot, yet the home side never managed a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.
Arsenal now have six points from their first two games and have moved to the top of the table alongside Manchester City, Hull City and Chelsea. The win also marked a personal achievement for manager Mikel Arteta, who recorded his 151st victory in his 250th Premier League match as manager.
"I'm really pleased about it; it was a big victory," Arteta said. "I believe we earned it. It was a solid performance by the team, and I know how difficult it is to win at this venue."
Last season, as they won the title, Arsenal placed a strong emphasis on defensive discipline and achieved eight different 1-0 wins on their way to ending a 22-year wait. That same structural stability proved the deciding factor in the match against Aston Villa. Arteta brought on the high-profile arrivals Bruno Guimaraes and former Villa defender Ezri Konsa in the second half to make their league debuts and finish the game.
For Aston Villa, the loss means they have gained neither points nor a single goal in their first two matches. Since their Europa League victory, Emery has made several major changes, parting ways with key players such as Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Konsa.
The club added eleven new players to its squad. This time, however, Villa showed a much more composed performance than their disastrous start at Brighton and Hove Albion, where they were down by four at the break.
As Emery said, Villa performed well against the team which is favourite to win the title. Although they are rebuilding, there were many positives: they didn't create any clear chances, but they also didn't concede any.
On Saturday, Villa travel to Hull City to earn their first points of the season, while on Sunday Arsenal return to the Emirates Stadium to host Chelsea in their first major match of the campaign.
