Iran has officially punched its ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan in the Asian qualifiers on Tuesday. The result ensures Iran finishes atop Group A with 20 points from eight matches, while Uzbekistan sits second with 17.
While playing at Tehran's iconic Azadi Sports Complex, Mehdi Taremi delivered when it mattered most, netting both goals for the hosts. Uzbekistan struck first in the 16th minute through Khojimat Erkinov before Taremi levelled the score in the 52nd minute. However, Uzbekistan responded instantly, regaining the lead through Ebosbek Fejulev just a minute later. But with time running out, Taremi came to Iran's rescue, scoring an 83rd-minute equalizer to seal qualification.
This marks Iran's fourth consecutive World Cup appearance and the seventh in their history. They join Japan (Asia), New Zealand (Oceania), and defending champions Argentina (South America) as the teams already confirmed for the global showpiece, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
With another World Cup ticket secured, Iran will now set its sights on making a deep run in 2026, hoping to break new ground on the biggest stage in world football.
