KATHMANDU — Fostering the Olympic spirit at the roof of the world, the Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) has launched a multi-tiered sporting campaign to commemorate Olympic Day 2026. This year’s celebrations mark a tradition for the South Asian nation, which has supported the global movement since 2011. Spanning all seven provinces, the festival bridges grassroots youth development and elite competition, mobilising national sports associations, security forces, institutional teams, and academic institutions in a collective tribute to the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23.
Friday saw schools across the capital become athletic venues. The schedule featured tournaments in football, futsal, basketball, volleyball, chess, and tug of war, alongside art competitions capturing the essence of Olympism. The futsal and football pitches saw strong rivalries, with Omega International Secondary School prevailing in futsal and Gyanodaya Bal Batika excelling in football. Regent Residential School showed skill in futsal and basketball, and Mahendra Bhrikuti excelled in tug-of-war. Adarsha Kanya Niketan stood out in volleyball, while William Public School promoted chess.

“Our vision for Olympic Day goes far beyond a single calendar date; it is an enduring week-long celebration of unity, resilience, and athletic excellence,” stated Ashok Ratna Bajracharya, NOC Vice President and Olympic Day Coordinator.
The scale of this year’s campaign highlights Nepal’s growing sporting presence. According to the NOC, 53 sporting events have been sanctioned for the week-long festival. Momentum is clear, with 22 competitions concluded and winners receiving honours from NOC dignitaries. Beyond grassroots tournaments, the festivities are set to culminate in the NOC’s main awards ceremony, dedicated to honouring the nation’s top sportspeople, coaches, and administrators who elevate Nepal internationally.
